Liz Holland

Chief Executive Officer

Liz Holland is the Chief Executive Officer and General Counsel of Abbell Associates. Liz is responsible for overseeing all business and legal matters, including development, financing, leasing, capital and construction projects, and investor and tenant relations.

Active in the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC), Liz served as the first Vice Chairman (2015-2016); Chairman (2016-2017) and currently serves as the Past Chairman on the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees.

In addition to ICSC, Liz is also a member of the Real Estate Roundtable and the Urban Land Institute (ULI) - Commercial & Retail Council - Blue. In February 2017, Liz became a Trustee of Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRT). In January 2018, Liz joined the Board of VICI Properties, Inc. (VICI), a gaming and hospitality real estate company.

Joe Sauer

President of Retail & Technology

Joe Sauer has been an Illinois licensed real estate broker for over 15 years. He is currently the President of Retail & Technology at Abbell Associates. Joe’s vast commercial real estate experience includes leading an Urban Retail Division where he specialized in navigating through urban environments; Tenant Representation, where he continues to successfully expand Fortune 500 companies; Landlord Representation, where he leverages his years of tenant and industry relationships to lease space, as well as participating in Technology Development specifically catering to the real estate community.

Prior to being a real estate professional, Joe was an associate publisher of Qualified Remodeler magazines and oversaw publishing and advertising sales of 5 trade magazines for over a decade. He was strategically involved with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA), NAHB Remodelers Council, National Associate of Remodeling Industry (NARI) and the Western Remodelers Conference.

Jos is an active member of the International Council of Shopping Center (ICSC). A supporter of the Eisenberg Foundation, Joe also enjoys reading, ice hockey and spending time with his family.

Jim Sutphen, CDP, CSM

Partner - COO / Director of Construction

Jim Sutphen currently serves as Partner, COO and Director of Construction for Abbell Associates. Jim is responsible for overseeing all development and construction activities along with day-to-day management and office leasing activities for the portfolio of projects. Recent projects include redevelopment activities of a former grocery-anchored shopping center in Geneva, Illinois and the continued repositioning of an of enclosed super regional mall in Des Moines, Iowa along with various other projects.

Over the past 31 years, Jim has held a variety of positions within the real estate industry. Prior to his current role at Abbell, Jim served as Vice President of Construction for the Midwest for Regency Centers Corporation, a publicly traded REIT, and oversaw all regional design and construction activity for the company. In his role with Regency, Jim oversaw the development and construction of several million square feet of new developments and re-development projects in the Midwest.

Before joining Regency, Jim served as Vice President of Construction and as Vice President of Property Management for Joseph Freed and Associates, a large privately held real estate development company based in Chicago. In multiple roles, Jim oversaw all day-to-day property management functions for the company’s multi-million square foot portfolio and then oversaw all design and construction activities for several million square feet of retail and mixed-use developments in Illinois, Michigan, and Colorado.

Jim is a 1986 graduate of the University of Illinois and received his CSM designation in 1995 and his CDP designation in 2010 from the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC). In addition, over the last 5 years, he has served on the ICSC Centerbuild Conference Program Committee.

Maureen Grove, CPA, MBA

Chief Financial Officer & Director of Accounting

Maureen Grove is a highly-talented, professional CPA specializing in commercial real estate. She has 30 years of hard-won and unique experiences as a detail-oriented, accountability-driven forensic analyst with a passion for strategy and an eye for future economic development and technological trends.

Over the course of her career, Maureen has been a key player in the acquisition, disposition and refinancing of transactions totaling over $2.5 billion in real estate assets and $2 billion in loans. Maureen has closed on some of the largest, record breaking transactions in Chicago, including the Citigroup Center/Ogilvie Transportation Center, Hyatt Hotel-100 West Monroe, Northern Trust Headquarters 181 West Madison, and the Chicago Motor Club.

Maureen is a licensed real estate broker, and belongs to the American Institute of CPAs, Financial Executives International (FEI), and Commercial Real Estate Executive Women (CREW). She is the past President of the Board of Directors for Chicago Youth Programs and continues as a board member.

Partner - SVP / Director of Leasing

Tom Walsh serves Abbell Associates as Partner, SVP and Director of Leasing, overseeing all retail leasing activity. Tom is a highly accomplished leasing veteran, with extensive industry relationships, and far reaching experience developing and executing leasing plans for open air, lifestyle, urban, mall, and mixed-use properties throughout the country, including re-development and ground up developments.

Tom has worked with a broad spectrum of tenants, such as retail anchors: Target, Ross, TJX, Zara, Petco, PetSmart, Fresh Thyme Market, Bob’s Furniture, Ashley Homestore, Burlington, Bed Bath & Beyond, Old Navy, Michael’s, DSW, among others. Specialty retail activity includes Ann Taylor, Eileen Fisher, Disney, LBrands, Hot Topic, Gap, Skechers, Puma flagship, Sola, Steve Madden and many more. Restaurant and entertainment work includes brands such as Rascal Flatts, Flix Brewhouse, Starbuck’s, Jamba Juice, Flat Top Grill, Max & Erma’s, Long Horn Steakhouse, California Pizza Kitchen, Putting Edge and Laser Quest to name a few.

Prior to joining Abbell, Tom spent 20 years with Joseph Freed and Associates, coordinating the Leasing activities of a portfolio that grew to 6 million square feet, including both ground up projects, existing property re-developments and urban re-developments such as the historic Sullivan Center re-development on State St, with City Target and DSW. Prior to joining Freed, Tom leased properties for developers Bronson & Hutensy in Hartford, CT, and Zaremba Midwest in Chicago, and started his real estate career at commercial brokerage firm Sheldon Good & Company in Chicago.

Tom is a graduate of Drake University, holds the Certified Leasing Specialist (CLS) and the Certified Retail Property Executive (CRX) designation from the International Conference of Shopping Centers, and is a licensed Illinois broker.

Luke Sauer

Executive Vice President

Luke Sauer is Abbell Associate’s Managing Broker and Executive Vice President of the Brokerage Division. He has represented tenants and landlords for almost 20 years: from Fortune 500 to regional clients.

In addition to his impressive tenant representative and landlord practice, Luke is active in acquisitions and sales of multi-family, hospitality and retail properties. His vision and tenacity have contributed to the transformations of Chicago’s burgeoning Hubbard Street and Motor Row Entertainment/McCormick Square Districts.

Prior to his involvement in real estate, Luke started a fast-growing company working with hotel and gaming industries in Las Vegas. Luke’s overhaul and new approach to slot redemption loyalty programs and merchandising helped transform customer experience and increase profitability. This success lead to starting a clothing company and design business focusing on decorated apparel and fashion.

Current memberships include the International Council of Shopping Centers, 46th Ward Zoning Committee, and mentor for The Honor Foundation (THF). Luke is a graduate of Choate Rosemary Hall and St. Lawrence University. All New-England and All-State soccer and ice hockey player. When possible, he travels to warm climates and most enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids.
